SINKS - Article from Kitchen & Bath - Spring 2005

CONSOLE

A console-style lavatory is a bowl surrounded by a wide deck and supported by legs (of china, metal, or other material) that sometimes incorporate towel bars. They offer more landing space for toiletries than pedestal sinks, but the plumbing remains visible.

WALL-MOUNT

This sink can be installed at any height. The plumbing can be shrouded with a matching china cover or revealed. Wall-mounted sinks are good space-savers; some are even designed to fit into a corner.

VANITY

With a vanity arrangement, a sink is supported by cabinetry that conceals plumbing and provides ample storage. The countertop and bowl can be made of any waterproof material, including solid surfacing. Although a standard vanity base is only 30 inches high, taller cabinets can be used to raise the basin and reduce back strain.

VESSEL

Above-counter basins are popular, as evidenced by the wide range of styles now available. Selecting an appropriate faucet may mean considering an extra-tall spout or a wall-mounted model. Even in this configuration, the counter will get some splash, so choose waterproof surface materials.

PEDESTAL

The most classic sink style is the pedestal. The china basin is supported by a matching column that hides the plumbing. Pedestals, however, can lack the necessary space to accommodate modern-day grooming essentials. Plan to create storage areas elsewhere.
